The lush worldbuilding and delightful blend of love, betrayal, and curses set the stage for a powerful and promising new series. Both heroines search for a sense of belonging in a treacherous, colonized world where magic (called “geomancy”) is deeply tied to the earth. The arrival of Rahmagut’s Claw, an astrological event that leaves the veil between the human world and the gods at its thinnest, puts Reina and Eva in each other’s paths as Doña Ursulina schemes to summon the god of the Void to grant her more power. Meanwhile, Eva Kesaré, human but “bastard born and ugly,” is shunned by her family because of her own affinity for magic. On the way, she is attacked by some supernatural creatures and Doña Ursulina saves her life, leaving Reina indebted to her grandmother-and determined to stay in the powerful witch’s favor. 'If you’re a fantasy-devouring reader like me, you will be absolutely swept away into this lush, South American-inspired fantasy world. When Reina Duvianos, a “half-nozariel in a country hostile to her kind,” receives a summons from her estranged, magic-wielding grandmother, Doña Ursulina Duvianos, she sets off across the treacherous mountains. The Sun and the Void will be published in July 2023. Romero Lacruz debuts and launches her Warring Gods series with a spellbinding sapphic epic fantasy about two young women navigating a world steeped in prejudice, folklore, and ancient magic.

There was so much POV and time period switching. Well - the beginning was confusing as hell. I was worried since this is an Oprah book and she is a hit-or-miss. This was a random find at the library and I was in the mood for a mystery. And when Mathilde's husband, Carl, returns from the war, he finds his small daughter, Ruth, in Amanda's tenacious grip, and she will tell him nothing about the night his wife drowned. Within a year, though, her beloved sister Mathilde drowns under mysterious circumstances. Her shame sends her into a nervous breakdown, and she returns to the family farm. A few years later, as a nurse in Milwaukee, she is seduced by a dishonorable man. As a young woman, Amanda Starkey, a Lutheran farmer's daughter, had been firmly discouraged from an inappropriate marriage with a neighboring Catholic boy. Although there were telephones and motor cars and dance halls in the small towns of Wisconsin in those years, the townspeople remained rigid and forbidding. Drowning Ruth opens in 1919, on the heels of the influenza epidemic that followed the First World War. As the first book in a mystery series, it has a lot of heavy lifting to do, which it does quite well. When this one turned up during one of my semi-weekly visits, I decided it was time. The mother-in-law of the owner of my favorite used bookstore has been on my ass for years to give the Inspector Rebus books a shot. Here is the life and lunatic times of the great eccentric genius, Groucho, a.k.a. With impeccable timing, outrageous humor, irreverent wit, and a superb sense of the ridiculous, Groucho tells the saga of the Marx Brothers: the poverty of their childhood in New York’s Upper East Side the crooked world of small-time vaudeville (where they learned to carry blackjacks) how a pretzel magnate and the graceless dancer of his dreams led to the Marx Brothers’ first Broadway hit, I’ll Say She Is!, how the stock market crash in 1929 proved a godsend for Groucho (even though he lost nearly a quarter of a million dollars) the adventures of the Marx Brothers in Hollywood, the making of their hilarious films, and Groucho’s triumphant television series, You Bet Your Life!. His solo career included work as a film actor, television game show emcee, and author of The Groucho Letters, Memoirs of a Mangy Lover, and his classic autobiography, Groucho and Me. The “Me” in the title is a comparatively unknown Marx named Julius (1895-1977), who, under the nom de plume of Groucho, enjoyed a sensational career on Broadway and in Hollywood with such comedy classics as Animal Crackers, Monkey Business, Horse Feathers, Duck Soup, A Night at the Opera, and A Day at the Races. The park is Kentucky, which is where I live and all of my novels are set. We’d rented a camper and did a great it of traveling as well as rented a lot of cabins in the woods.Īfter each trip, I found myself in my she-shed (yes, I had a she-shed) writing away in a new series, A CAMPER & CRIMINALS COZY MYSTERY SERIES that was set deep in the Daniel Boone National Park, which is a place I’m very well acquainted with. Ask anyone who has met me in person, but a couple of years ago I started find peace in nature. I’ve always fancied myself as an extrovert. In case you’d not guessed, I’m talking about me, the girl who was awarded the senior award of MOST TALKATIVE. Not social distancing or the virus, the extrovert writer realizing that she’s actually an introvert. It all started a couple of years ago really. Y’all, this is some very uncertain times and as a writer who is an extrovert, this whole social distancing thing has been a huge learning curve to me as well as me as a writer. Today she’s talking about finding the silver lining in the pandemic cloud…take it away, Tonya! Hey readers! Liz here, happy to welcome our dear friend Tonya Kappes, author of the Camper & Criminals Cozy Mystery Series back to the blog. I followed Alard through the winding, cobblestone streets, taking every opportunity to twist my neck to see the buildings around me. I’ll be looking forward to the new season this summer! What are your favorites-Doctors, companions and episodes? I’d love to hear! Favorite episodes? I loved the weeping angels episodes, along with the two library episodes. Favorite companion? Amy, along with Rory. That vulnerability makes him as human as the mortals he protects.įavorite Doctors? I’m very partial to Matt Smith (you never forget your first Doctor), with David Tennant coming in a close second. And although he has people who love him, he is still very alone. He understands that winning can come at a terrible price, and that power corrupts. Yet he is the most feared thing in the universe. I love that the Doctor gives his enemies a choice before he stops the problem, and that he solves his issues without guns. In a media world that tends to favor violent characters like Jack Bauer in 24, it’s a wonderful thing to see a character who triumphs by the power of words and wit, cleverness and compassion. But there’s something else I really appreciate. I’ve enjoyed the (mostly) excellent writing. Regardless of that, I’m having a blast enjoying the 2005-2011 episodes thanks to Netflix. Ok, so I’m the last person on the planet to discover the rebooted Dr. It begins with the Union Carbide Corporation holding a smart detective contest for their loyal clients. Tales of the Black Widowers #1: The first book is based on a bibliographic twist and without a specific reference. In this review, we shall cover Asimov’s letter –book series The Black Widowers-a six-part series book centered on his personal experiences with a seniors group dubbed The Trap Door Spiders. By writing in this type of style Walker is able to fully exemplify Celie’s thoughts creating a better understanding for the reader by revealing her level of education and social class. Based on the level of diction, Walker writes in an uneducated, southern style. The setting takes place in rural areas of the south where race played a huge part during the time when discrimination was more prevalent in America. In The Color Purple, Alice Walker writes in a southern dialect and low level diction. In addition to these graphic events that were both inconceivable and horrific in every sense for Celie, the events described in the entries led to the novel being banned within some high schools. Now, in the hands of critically acclaimed sportswriter and culture critic Howard Bryant, one of baseball’s greatest and most original stars finally gets his due. Henderson embraced this shift with his trademark style, playing for nine different teams throughout his decades-long career and sculpting a brash, larger-than-life persona that stole the nation’s heart. And it’s a story of a sea change in sports, when athletes gained celebrity status and Black players finally earned equitable salaries. “If you cut Rickey Henderson in half, you’d have two Hall of Famers,” the baseball historian Bill James once said. But perhaps even more than his prowess on the field, Rickey Henderson’s is a story of Oakland, California, the town that gave rise to so many legendary athletes like him. He holds the record for the most stolen bases in a single game, and he’s scored more runs than any player ever. “Seldom does a sports biography-especially a page-turner-so comprehensively explain the forces that made an icon the way they are.” – Sports IllustratedFrom the author of The Last Hero: A Life of Henry Aaron comes the definitive biography of Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson, baseball’s epic leadoff hitter and base-stealer who also stole America’s heart over nearly five electric decades in the game.Few names in the history of baseball evoke the excellence and dynamism that Rickey Henderson’s does.
